Public Won’t Be Told In Advance Of Any Executions Of The Bali Nine
If any of the last executions by firing squad in Indonesia are anything to go by, it’s highly likely the public will only know once an execution has actually taken place.
Amnesty International said that in 2004, Ayodhya Prasad Chaubey, an Indian convicted of heroin trafficking, was executed by firing squad at 2.30 in the morning in a field on the outskirts of Medan on August 5. He was originally charged in 1991!
For the week prior to his execution, his laywers complained about being denied acces to their client, and being refused a date of execution.
Only after his death was the execution announced.
It’s highly likely that the members of the Bali Nine who have been sentenced to death will have a similar fate.
This is in stark contrast to the exectuion of those in Singapore’s Changi Prison, whereby execution dates are disclosed long before the event.
In October, 2004 Thais Saelow Prasert, 59, and Namsong Sirilak, 32, were also shot by a firing squad for importing 12.1 kilograms of heroin.
