Saddam Hussein executed by Hanging

Saddam Hussein, former Iraqi dictator, was executed by hanging on Saturday 30th December 2006 in Iraq. Hussein died just before dawn after being held in United States custody for three years.
Hussein was convicted of killing 148 Muslims in 1982. On his last night alive, two of Saddam’s half brothers visited him on death row where it is said that he gave them his will and other personal belongings.
When Saddam went into the gallows he refused to wear a hood and was holding the holy Qu’ran.
In Baghdad, people were celebrating his death by firing guns and dancing in the streets. But people in Tikrit, which was once power dominated by Hussein, were expressing their sorrow towards his death.
This statement was issued by the White House from President Bush on Friday night, “Bringing Saddam Hussein to justice will not end the violence in Iraq, but it is an important milestone on Iraq’s course to becoming a democracy that can govern, sustain, and defend itself, and be an ally in the War on Terror”.
