Giant Wetas Return to Mainland- the First Time in 100 years

100 rare Cook Straight gaint wetas are being released into the wild on Mainland New Zealand. This will be the first time in 100 years.

The wetas are to be freed on Sunday at Wellingtons Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. This will be the first attempt to free these wetas since they became extinct here over a century ago.

The wetas are around 77mm long, and weigh up to 27gm. These insects are around mouse size and are among the heavest in the world.

Dispite their size these wetas are far less dangerous than the tree weta.
