Telecom told off For Misleading Ads
One of New Zealands mobile phone company Telecom has been told off for advertisments that have been misleading by the Advertising Standards Complaints Board.
The decision was released today, complaint against Telecom was held up by the board. The Board determinded both companies were in breah of the truthful presentation rule of the Advertising Code of Ethics.
The complaint related to the television commercial for the its freedom plan. The freedom plan is where a deal whereby customers pay $10 a month to call between a designated telecom mobile phone and a telecom landline.
The voice over on the advertisment stated “you can call as much as you like”. How ever on the bottom of the screen is very small writing it said “normal charges apply after 60 minutes”. This ment that the offer was infact not unlimited as it had stated. Which makes the voice over “misleading and inappropriate”.
Telecom argued that there was clearly identifyable terms and conditions in the advertisment. The Board however ruled that the condition “significantly diminished the offer”, and the advertisement was likely to mislead a consumer.
