New Zealand And The Boy Racer Problem
After another death involving illegal street racing in Christchurch authorities are considering the possibility of compulsory third party insurance in an effort to curb the ever-increasing problem dubbed as “boy racers”.Incidently, (and I say this knowing full well the statisics of male versus female road accidents) isn’t it interesting that we don’t hear any equal rights campaigners or politically correct individuals crying “sexist” on the term “boy” racers?
Surely some females participate also? I digress…
Despite efforts by Police, communities, and even acts of Parliament the Boy Racer issue continues to esculate.
New Zealand seems to be a hotspot for the issue, and some would argue that the lack of compulsory insurance leads to young people being able to modify cars and come to grief.
I laugh sometimes at the complex reasoning and solutions put forward to explain and solve the problem, when really…. this is simple stuff.
Here’s The Simple Truth
To say that the problem has always been is a bit of a cop out, but also a great way to start in understanding.
History teaches us that young men (especially, but not limited to) have always tested boundaries and have had a need for adventure and accolades.
In World War 1, young men were keen to sign up for the military to see the world, or to have an adventure.
Young men racing cars in an illegal forum is nothing new also. My generaton has done it, as has my fathers generation.
THIS IS SIMPLY YOUNG GUYS TESTING BOUNDARIES
And therein lies the difference. In my generation guys were hooning around in cars also and getting up to mischief….
BUT, if a member of the public reported a car being really stupid, the offending racer would end up with the boys in blue on the doorstep.
Today, try even getting a cop out if your car or house has been broken into.
Society has given these guys no consequence.
They live in an instant world where the cars they own are on hire purchase, as are the stereo’s wheels and cool exhausts.
When caught breaking road rules, simple infrigement notices are issued and allowed by the courts to be paid off in a weekly amount! - Some deterent.
