New Zealand And The Anti-Nuclear Issue
OK, so what the hell is wrong with New Zealand when it comes to nuclear issues?
I hear on the news today, that our infamous Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Winston Peters is to travel to the United States, to meet with Condoleeza Rice and other US dignitaries.

Why did this make news? - Because Mr Peters has said that he intends to stay away from the issue of New Zealand’s anti-nuke policy.
Incredible!
This ridiculous policy of NO NUKES in New Zealand (which even includes a ban of nuclear powered vessels in our waters) is archaic and completely paranoid.
I can almost understand New Zealand’s approach to nuclear ARMED vessels ( i.e Ships carrying nuclear weapons), but the policy also includes any vessel that is nuclear powered.)
In 1984, New Zealand backed out of the ANZUS agreement (a three-way defence agreement between the US, New Zealand & Australia that had been in force since World War II) over a dispute with the US over visiting rights for US ships in New Zealand ports.
The agreement, which was more of an advantage to New Zealand than to the United States was essentially disolved because of this singular issue.
The US has a long memory, and I would imagine this issue is really why the Americans now refer to Australia as “allies” and New Zealand, as just “good friends“.
This is really a slap in the face for New Zealand war veterans from Both World Wars, The Korean War, and the Vietnam war where we acted with the US as “allies”.
Wake up New Zealand. You’re a bunch pathetic spineless sheep still living in the dark age.
Does anyone even remember that it was only 60 or so years ago that New Zealand and Australia may have fallen to the Japanese it it were not for the United States?
Hell, it’s no wonder the rest of the world think we all wear grass skirts, live in caves and have our heads in the sand.
The Kiwi motto ” she’ll be right, mate” describes the New Zealand attitude perfectly.
With this issue being really the only sticky point between NZ & US relations, one would be inclined to think that MAYBE, just maybe it’s worth discussing with our good friends in the US after some 22 Years!
With New Zealand’s attitude on such issues, I’m surprised we even adopted the metric system or have the internal combustion engine.
New Zealand will have to get with the times soon however, with looming electricity supply shortages. (Not to mention a greater need now than ever for security in the Southern Pacific Region).
A couple of nice little concrete domes, placed close to where the electricity is drawn would save a huge amount of hydro-electric generation, and also solve the problem of transporting massive amounts of energy from the South Island (where it is generated) to the North Island where it is mainly required.

In any case, old Winnie (Winston Peters) should at least have a discussion with the US on this issue. The fact he will not, just reinforces my opinion that Mr Peters is just a Labour Party lap-dog.
