UN Special Investigator Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen Looks At Race Relations In New Zealand
UN investigator Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen has recently spent one week in New Zealand
Although supossedly in New Zealand to provide a UN report of the recent Foreshore & Seabed Legislation Stavenhagen also expressed concern at the “growing disparity between Maori (indigenous people) and Non - Maori.”
Stavenhagen may be a UN human rights and race relations expert and a professor but I think he has missed the mark on this one. Whilst a report is still pending, clearly he reached his determination before arriving in New Zealand.
The UN became interested in tiny New Zeland with regard to human rights after the Labour Government’s hatchet job of the “Foreshore & Seabed” Legislation.
Disgruntled Maori had a right to be upset, after this legislation essentially denied them their day in court on the issue. However it seems that the professors research on the rest of the issues may well have been one-sided.
Interesting how the UN is wasting time with New Zealand, when it should be looking at real human rights abuse in the obvious parts of the world.
UN investigator Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen would be better to deal with Human Rights issues in his own back yard (Mexico) first.
