Van Nguyen, The Australian Facing Execution In Singapore On Friday
Australian Heroin Smuggler into Singapore, Van Nguyen faces execution in Singapore this Friday.
Recent media announcements regarding his lawyers efforts to convince Australian Officials to make a “last-minute” deal with Singapore excluding Australians from the imposed death penalty are a joke.
Van Nguyen will be executed as scheduled, hung at dawn on Friday. Sign The Petition Against Van Nguyen’s Hanging Here
Most of the Western World see the death penalty for something “trivial” like Heroin smuggling as a barbaric, horrific sentence to impose.
However, as anyone who has travelled around the Asian countries will tell you…The Death Penalty for Drugs in these countries is no secret.
There are constant reminders on huge billboards throughout the airports and all points of entry. “Death Penalty For Drugs”.
Everyone knows this, particularly Asian people.
Van Nguyen knew the risks and decided to take the risks anyway - not smart. Very sad for his family and his mother who is currently in Singapore.
Australian citizens demanding that their government introduce some form of trade restrictions, should the execution proceed, are a joke.
How fraudulent the Western world must seem to othhers at the moment. All this press over one scumbag drug smuggler.
You see this one scumbag drug smuggler is an Australian, which seems to make all the difference.
His life is obviously worth more in the eyes of the Western World, as there has been little protest for the multitudes of Asian drug smugglers executed in Singapore every year.
Clearly, then it seems the Western World is more concerned with the preservation of it’s own culture, and as a result place other cultures at a lower value.
Having said the above, I find it rather hard to support the death penalty, partularly for drug offences.
The punishment doesn’t seem to befit the crime.
It’s hard not to to imagine yourself in the place of the condemned person.
Can you just imagine that on the eve of the execution, how insignificant any amount of gains from drug smuggling would seem.
The likes of John Howard and Helen Clark coming out in support of the Anti- Death Penalty Brigade is no surprise to me. However I don’t recall them being so outspoken prior t death sentences being imposed.
It would be nice to see the leaders of these countries continue their efforts, regardless of the outcome on Friday.
In countries like New Zealand and Australia the likes of John Howard and Helen Clark (especially) would prefer to gives criminals like Van Nguyen a cup of tea, a talking to, and ask them not to do it again… A Vast contrast to the death penalty in Singapore.
