More Car Buying Secrets: Exhaust Emmisions and WOF Standard.
Earlier this year a new LTSA rule (33001/1 Vehicle Exhaust Emmisons 2006) came into effect.
Aside from giving enforcement authorities like the Police the ability to issue an infringment notice for vehicles which clearly emit smoke, the law has one major effect:
Warrant of Fitness Inspecting agents are now required to check vehicle for obviously visable smoke during the WOF process.
If a vehicle has visable smoke emmisions as described further below:
THE VEHICLE WILL FAIL THE WOF
This may not sound bad, but for most vehicles that have large amounts of visable smoke, the repair cost would be more than the value of the car.
The 10 second rule: The vehicle must not emit smoke or vapor for more than 10 seconds.
This rule applies to both petrol and diesel vehicles, and follows similar changes made in Australia, Canada and the US.
The obvious lesson for the savvy buyer is to steer well clear of ANY vehicle emiting smoke period.
